While you can play games developed on MD Engine on any emulator as well as MD Engine debugger it's always recommended to test on real hardware.
The flast cart we use for testing and developing the engine is avaibale for anyone to purchase.
It supports up to 64 megabits (8 megabytes) of flat memory (no mapper needed).
With this flash cart though you won't be able to access the MegaCD.
But that's not even supported on MD Engine so we thing having the extra space is more important!
The cart relies on flash memory for saving, as it lacks SRAM or FRAM, MD Engine supports this type of saving outside the box, so there is no extra work needed from developers.
This has been done to avoid shipping litium bateries as well as to avoid the high costs of FRAM memory, as a draw back, this cartdrige can't be use to make reproduction carts of original Megadrive games that feature saving, but that was not intended anyway. d
Some pictures of the finished cart:
MD Engine has been tested also with a few other flash carts.
Here is the complete list:
MD Engine and the previous flash cart has been tested on original consoles as well as on different clone consoles.
